Mawdsleys has gained an increasing number of naval and marine contracts due to our expertise in the repair and refurbishment of specialist equipment such as stern motors.
Recently, Mawdsleys took receipt of a job for the repair of motors for the Latvian Navy. The Latvian Navy has a fleet of 18 ships and the Latvian armed forces has 16,700 active personnel.
The Challenge
Mawdsleys were contracted to repair two propeller motors that had suffered damage during operation.
The motors were 85kw / 8 pole port and starboard stern thrust / propeller motors. The project involved a strip and survey of the motors to assess the extent of the damage and provide a quote for repair.
On acceptance of the quote, the motors were sent to our state of the art workshop in Bristol for repair which is fully equipped to deal with specialist motors.
In naval and marine contracts, fast turnaround and competitive pricing are critical. One of the main challenges faced is ensuring that the motors are repaired and returned to the Latvian Navy within a specified timeframe to ensure the ships can resume normal operation.
Another challenge is the complex nature of the motors, which require specialised knowledge, expertise and equipment to repair.

The Solution

- Reassembly of the motors.
- Testing of the motors.
After the agreed scope of work was carried out the motors were shipped to the client and the project was delivered within time and budget.
