Coil rewind done right

Field Coil Rewinds

If your DC motor is underperforming — or not running at all — there’s a good chance your field coils are the reason. These tightly wound copper coils create the magnetic field your motor depends on. When they fail, your system grinds to a halt. That’s where we come in. At Mawdsleys, we specialise in the fast, precise field coil repairs and replacements for all makes and models of DC motors and generators. Whether it’s wear from years of use, damage from vibration, or catastrophic burnout, we know how to get you back online — quickly and correctly. With a dedicated winding shop on site, experienced engineers on the floor, and high-grade materials on the shelves, we don’t wait around for parts or subcontract the work. We handle everything under one roof.

Inside the coil: What we see, what we fix

Field coils aren’t just copper and resin — they’re critical components of your motor’s magnetic architecture. Each one is precisely engineered, often in matched pairs, to provide the polarity needed to keep your equipment running cleanly and efficiently. Main pole coils carry the magnetic flux; interpoles clean up commutation. When they break down, problems follow fast: erratic torque, overheating, and eventual failure. That is when a coil rewind is necessary.

The most common issues we see? Earthing from degraded insulation. Burnouts from excessive heat or electrical overload. Fatigued leads that have lost their flex or connection integrity. In some cases, we can bring a coil back to life with a deep clean and bake. In others, we’ll strip it out and rewind from scratch. Either way, the work is done in-house by engineers who’ve handled hundreds of coils just like yours — and probably worse.

Repaired to perform. Delivered on time.

Rewinding a field coil isn’t just a matter of wire turns. It’s a precision craft that demands the right tools, the right materials, and the right people. At Mawdsleys, we start by stripping the damaged coil clean and insulating the pole. Then we rewind the coil under tension using our calibrated winding machines — ensuring every turn is consistent and exact. Once wound, the field coil is dipped in the correct class of resin, cured, tested for insulation and resistance, and refitted to spec.

We’ve invested in a full-service workshop because we believe in getting the job done properly, without third-party hold-ups. It’s how we keep our turnaround times short and our standards high. If your motor’s down, we’ll get it back up. If it’s struggling, we’ll make it stronger. We don’t just rewind field coils — we restore performance.
