The Importance of Checking Motor Connections

As a rotating machines repair Company we see many types of failure on all types of motors and generators. Regardless of the machine type, one form of failure that is common to all is the damage caused by improper or loose connections.

Whilst it is a small percentage of cases, we still see a handful of instances each year. To prevent this type of failure it recommended that care is taken in making the connections for the first installation and that regular checks of the terminals are made to ensure they remain effective.

On initial installation it is important to connect the incoming cable or socket directly to the terminal or busbar without any washer or spacer that could cause a high resistance joint.

In this generator, washers were placed between the incoming cable sockets and the connection busbars, resulting in excessive heat and damage.

In most instances, cables are connected correctly but there is still a risk of a loose connection causing overheating of the terminals with the potential for damage and subsequent fire risk.

In this motor, a loose connection has caused one of the motor leads to become charred.
