Why We Don’t Just Hire Engineers—We Build Them

At Mawdsleys BER, we don’t wait for skilled engineers to knock on our door.
We grow them ourselves.

Meet Andrew. He’s the latest apprentice to join our team, and he’s already showing the kind of hands-on curiosity that turns into real engineering talent.

Andrew’s always been a fixer. From a young age, he was the one taking things apart just to figure out how they worked—and more importantly, how to put them back together. That curiosity led him to an Electrical Installation course at college, which sparked an interest in engineering he couldn’t shake.

Today, he’s starting a 3-year Level 3 apprenticeship in Maintenance and Operations Engineering (Mechanical Pathway) through City of Bristol College—where two of our current engineers, Sam and Toby, also trained. Andrew spends part of his time in the classroom and the rest with us, getting stuck into real jobs, real machines, and real deadlines.

But here’s what makes Andrew stand out: he’s got drive. The same energy he brings to the football pitch—he’s a left winger for his local team and a die-hard Chelsea and Bristol Rovers fan—he brings to the shop floor.

And he’s not alone. Sam, Joe and Jack came up through the same apprenticeship path. Today, they’re full-time members of the Mawdsleys’ engineering team. Toby, another rising star(he was the main man behind our recent project with Collegiate School), is wrapping up his final year.

We don’t just offer apprenticeships—we offer careers. Long-term, hands-on, and built around people who want to learn, grow, and get better every day.

Because when you invest in your own people, you don’t just build a team.
You build a future.
